Job Summary/Description: WIS News 10 is seeking an energetic, digitally savvy Weekend Meteorologist to join our First Alert Weather team in Columbia, South Carolina.
We want a dynamic communicator who pairs strong scientific expertise with a digital-first instinct—someone who commands the screen on linear broadcast and thrives in the fast-paced world of digital, streaming, and social storytelling. Duties/Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
• Lead Multiplatform Storytelling: Produce and deliver compelling weather content across linear broadcast, OTT/streaming platforms, mobile apps, and social channels—tailoring presentations to engage audiences wherever they consume news.
• Drive Digital Engagement: Create dynamic, native digital weather content (quick-turn social videos, live digital updates, and interactive radar breakdowns) throughout the day to grow audience loyalty and engagement.
• Own the Midlands Forecast: Analyze meteorological data and model guidance to build accurate, actionable forecasts for Columbia and our viewing area across the South Carolina Midlands.
• Command Severe Weather: Track severe events with urgency and calm authority, delivering immediate, life-saving coverage across on-air and digital streams during breaking weather.
• Deliver Digital-Only Shows and Discussions: Weather doesn't stop when the show is over; you will have the opportunity to talk science, do science-related stories, and conduct in-depth interviews on our stream and podcasts.
• Maximize Visual Impact: Design clear, visually arresting graphics using the WSI MAX ecosystem to turn complex meteorological concepts into easy-to-digest visual stories.
• Collaborate Across Newsrooms: Partner closely with the Chief Meteorologist, digital content producers, and newsroom leadership to ensure seamless, multi-platform weather coverage.
• Report from the Field: Deliver live, immersive field reporting that brings the impact of significant weather events directly to our viewers.
• This is a weekend evening position.
Qualifications/Requirements:
• Experience: Minimum 2 years of on-air and digital broadcast meteorology experience.
• Digital Fluency: Demonstrated track record of creating engaging video content for digital, OTT, and social platforms (YouTube, TikTok/Reels, Facebook Live, etc.).
• Technical
Skills: Hands-on proficiency with WSI MAX
• Education & Credentials: Bachelor’s degree in Meteorology or Atmospheric Science.
• AMS or CBM/NWA seal preferred.
• High-Pressure Execution: Proven ability to handle live, wall-to-wall severe weather coverage with composure and precision.
• Schedule Flexibility: Willingness to work weekends, holidays, and breaking/severe weather shifts as needed.
